I find that when I’m in on Friday nights, I’m the most productive on this blog. But that could be the result of the boredom I’m currently experiencing. In any case, I was looking through some videos online when I happened upon my old Vimeo account. Woah, it’s like a blast from the past! Here’s the link: http://vimeo.com/3550637

Watching these, it amazes me that I did some of these routes. And these aren’t even the more terrifying ones. Also, I miss the scientific conversations and fitness advice from Joe.

Fat Talk & the Rest of the Group from john quan on Vimeo.

(Discussion between Joe and Mike. Then panning around to see the rest of the gang being social)

Run down of the videos:

16. Joe talking about the route to one of the missing mines after he did some exploring. Trip report from that hike by Joe.

7. Us being kids and playing in the snow. My trip report from the first time I did the route. Perhaps one of the best hikes I’ve ever been on.

Joe’s report from the day the video was taken.

4. Us bushwhacking a section on our way up to Monrovia Peak. Ofir was trying to grab onto some brush to pull himself up, but failed miserably. Fun times all around.

Joe’s trip report with another close up shot of Ofir successfully pulling himself up.

My report. A lot of shots with the gang.

Watching these, I can’t help but think that we were just a bunch of grown up kids having fun in the woods. Good old days for sure!

There’s something strange that happens when on a very long road trip…you start to listen to all sorts of Songs. Songs that you normally wouldn’t listen to unless it came up randomly on the radio or at a restaurant, elevators, or even a baseball game.

But here are the notable songs that I took away from this trip:

Chris De Burgh :: Lady in Red
Like the voice and the images the lyrics conjure up. Also, the Weight Watchers commercial kept popping up in my head. And we saw a lady wearing a red dress in Vancouver.

Europe :: The Final Countdown
One of the most motivating songs out there. Plus, it always makes me want to do magic!

Joe Esposito :: You’re the Best Around
This song came up after passing some cyclist on a pretty long hill. Just another motivational song to help push through the pain.

Kenny Loggins :: Danger Zone
You never can go wrong with Kenny Loggins. But when it comes to road trips with two guys, Danger Zone never ever fails.

Jackson Browne :: Running on Empty
Just an all around good song. Great for those long stretches in California when all you’re passing are farms and a whole lot of nothing and are wondering where your life is heading.

Neil Diamond :: America
Because when out of the country, you just want to feel at home.

10,000 Maniacs :: More Than This
Another all around good song. Slow, smooth, and catchy. Just the perfect song for zoning out.

Jesus and the Mary Chain :: Just Like Honey
Only listened to this once. But I thought I’d throw it in as a bonus because it goes with the previous video. One of my favorite movies and scenes ever.

The stops to and from included SF, Portland, Seattle, and Yosemite.

A brief recap: We car camped near Portland, Seattle, and Yosemite. In Vancouver overnighted in an hotel and explored the bar scene. Which I should say, is pretty lively. In SF, we were lucky enough to stay indoors and be able to shower and do some laundry.

For food, we stuck to the normal fast food joints on the way up. In the cities, we ate at unique locations worthy of being featured on tv. Such as Bunk Sandwiches in Portland.

In total we logged about 3,300 miles over the 9 day period. And during those drives, the most scenic of places started near the end of northern California and ended in the same spot on the way back. The drive along the 5 in Central and Southern Cali has the worst views known to man.

More pics coming soon!

This weekend was supposed to be the reckoning on all roads. The news hyped Caramageddon up so much, that I think everyone listened and stayed local. I say this because that’s exactly what I did. Then I checked the freeways on Saturday:

To my amazement, all green! LA has never been like that before. So on Saturday I decided to take advantage of this and head off to ride Santa Monica on Sunday.

So the Sunday ride came and went. And after eating at the Fathers Office, I checked the routes home; and awesomely enough, all green still!

Lesson for the weekend: Carmageddon needs to happen more often.
